Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI dies at 95

The Holy See Press Office announced that Pope emeritus Benedict XVI died at 9:34 a.m. CET Saturday, Dec. 31, in his residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. The 95-year-old Pope emeritus had chosen the monastery as his residence after resigning from the Petrine ministry in 2013. Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, said the Pope emeritus received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick in the monastery at the end of Mass on Dec. 28.

The Holy See Press Office has released additional details regarding Thursday’s funeral Mass for Pope Benedict XVI (prayers and readings for the funeral). The funeral begins at 9:30 a.m. Rome time (3:30 a.m. ET)

  • At 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 5, our parish will pray the Mass of the Dead for the repose of the soul of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
  • Bishop Walkowiak will celebrate the 12:05 p.m. Mass on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew with a special intention for Pope Benedict XVI.
  • Bishop Walkowiak is encouraging all members of the faithful to recite a rosary for the repose of Pope Benedict XVI’s soul through the day of his funeral Mass, Jan. 5.
